Câu chuyện xảy ra khi đức Thế Tôn ở tại Kỳ Viên, liên quan tới một số Tỳ-kheo.
Một số các Tỳ-kheo đến an cư ở một thị trấn biên giới. Tháng đầu trôi qua hết sức an ổn. Nhưng tháng thứ hai, bọn trộm cướp tấn công thị trấn và bắt một số người làm con tin. Từ lúc ấy, mọi người phải bận rộn phòng thủ, chống lại trộm cướp, và không còn thì giờ chăm sóc đến thức ăn vật dụng cho các thầy. Các thầy trải qua những tháng thật bất an.
An cư xong, các thầy trở về tinh xá Kỳ Viên, đảnh lễ Phật, lui ngồi một bên. Đức Phật hỏi thăm thân mật:
- Các ông có được an ổn không?
- Bạch Thế Tôn, tháng đầu thật an ổn. Nhưng những tháng sau trộm cướp hoành hành, dân chúng chẳng còn thì giờ đâu lo lắng cho chúng con. Thời gian đó thật khốn đốn.
Phật dạy:
- Không sao. Các ông đừng phiền muộn. Không dễ gì lúc nào cũng tìm được nơi an cư hoàn toàn như ý. Nhưng hãy như dân cư phòng thủ trị trấn của họ, mỗi thầy Tỳ-kheo phải tự canh phòng mình.
Ngài nói kệ:
315Như thành ở biên thùy,
Trong ngoài đều phòng hộ,
Cũng vậy, phòng hộ mình,
Sát na chớ buông lung,
Giây phút qua, sầu muộn,
Khi rơi vào địa ngục.

Nagaraṃ yathāti imaṃ dhammadesanaṃ satthā jetavane viharanto sambahule āgantuke bhikkhū ārabbha kathesi.
Te kira ekasmiṃ paccante vassaṃ upagantvā paṭhamamāse sukhaṃ vihariṃsu. Majjhimamāse corā āgantvā tesaṃ gocaragāmaṃ paharitvā karamare gahetvā agamaṃsu. Tato paṭṭhāya manussā corānaṃ paṭibāhanatthāya taṃ paccantanagaraṃ abhisaṅkharontā te bhikkhū sakkaccaṃ upaṭṭhātuṃ okāsaṃ na labhiṃsu. Te aphāsukaṃ vassaṃ vasitvā vutthavassā satthu dassanāya sāvatthiṃ gantvā satthāraṃ vanditvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Satthā tehi saddhiṃ katapaṭisanthāro “kiṃ, bhikkhave, sukhaṃ vasitthā”ti pucchitvā, “bhante, mayaṃ paṭhamamāsameva sukhaṃ vasimhā, majjhimamāse corā gāmaṃ pahariṃsu, tato paṭṭhāya manussā nagaraṃ abhisaṅkharontā sakkaccaṃ upaṭṭhātuṃ okāsaṃ na labhiṃsu. Tasmā aphāsukaṃ vassaṃ vasimhā”ti vutte “alaṃ, bhikkhave, mā cintayittha, phāsuvihāro nāma niccakālaṃ dullabho, bhikkhunā nāma yathā te manussā nagaraṃ gopayiṃsu, evaṃ attabhāvameva gopayituṃ vaṭṭatī”ti vatvā imaṃ gāthamāha –
“Nagaraṃ yathā paccantaṃ, guttaṃ santarabāhiraṃ;
Evaṃ gopetha attānaṃ, khaṇo vo mā upaccagā;
Khaṇātītā hi socanti, nirayamhi samappitā”ti.
Tattha santarabāhiranti, bhikkhave, yathā tehi manussehi taṃ paccantanagaraṃ dvārapākārādīni thirāni karontehi saantaraṃ, aṭṭālakaparikhādīni thirāni karontehi sabāhiranti santarabāhiraṃ suguttaṃ kataṃ, evaṃ tumhepi satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā ajjhattikāni cha dvārāni pidahitvā dvārarakkhikaṃ satiṃ avissajjetvā yathā gayhamānāni bāhirāni cha āyatanāni ajjhattikānaṃ upaghātāya saṃvattanti, tathā aggahaṇena tānipi thirāni katvā tesaṃ appavesāya dvārarakkhikaṃ satiṃ appahāya vicarantā attānaṃ gopethāti attho. Khaṇo vo mā upaccagāti yo hi evaṃ attānaṃ na gopeti, taṃ puggalaṃ ayaṃ buddhuppādakhaṇo majjhimadese uppattikhaṇo sammādiṭṭhiyā paṭiladdhakhaṇo channaṃ āyatanānaṃ avekallakhaṇoti sabbopi ayaṃ khaṇo atikkamati, so khaṇo tumhe mā atikkamatu. Khaṇātītāti ye hi taṃ khaṇaṃ atītā, te ca puggale so ca khaṇo atīto, te nirayamhi samappitā hutvā tattha nibbattitvā socantīti attho.
Desanāvasāne te bhikkhū uppannasaṃvegā arahatte patiṭṭhahiṃsūti.

315. Even as a frontier city...
This religious instruction was given by the Teacher while he was in residence at Jetavana with reference to a company of visiting monks.
The story goes that these monks went to a certain frontier country, entered upon residence, and passed the first month pleasantly. In the second month, however, a band of thieves came and attacked the village to which they were accustomed to resort for alms, and carried away some of the inhabitants as prisoners. From that time on, the men were so busy fortifying that frontier city against thieves that they found no opportunity to minister properly to the needs of those monks. The result was that the monks spent their residence in great discomfort.
When they had completed residence, they returned to Sāvatthi to see the Teacher, saluted the Teacher, and sat down respectfully on one side. The Teacher, after exchanging the usual friendly greetings with them, asked them, “Monks, did you pass the time pleasantly?” “Reverend Sir,” replied the monks, “the first month we spent there was a very pleasant one. But in the second month a band of thieves attacked the village, and from that time on, the inhabitants were so busily engaged in fortifying the city that they found no opportunity to minister properly to our needs. The result was that we had a very uncomfortable time.” Said the Teacher, “Never mind, monks; be not disturbed. It is a difficult matter to obtain a pleasant dwelling at all times. But just as those men guarded their city, so ought a monk to guard himself.” So saying, he pronounced the following Stanza,
315. Even as a frontier city is well guarded both within and without,
Even so one should guard himself; let not a moment slip.
For they that let the moments slip, mourn, delivered over to Hell.
