Đức Thế Tôn dạy những lời này khi Ngài ở tại Kỳ Viên, liên quan đến Bà-la-môn Đại Hỉ, Pasàdabahula.
Một hôm, sau khi nghe Phật thuyết pháp, một vị Bà-la-môn hoan hỉ đến nỗi từ đó đều đặn mỗi ngày ông thỉnh mười sáu vị Tỳ-kheo đến nhà cúng dường. Mỗi khi các thầy đến, ông ra đón, đỡ bình bát và mời:
- Xin cung thỉnh Ngài A-la-hán vào. Xin mời Ngài A-la-hán ngồi.
Dù thưa thỉnh với bất cứ thầy Tỳ-kheo nào, ông đều xưng tụng là A-la-hán. Những thầy chưa chứng Sơ quả nghĩ thầm: "Ông cư sĩ này tưởng trong chúng ta có thầy chứng A-la-hán". Còn các thầy chứng A-la-hán lại nghĩ: "Ông cư sĩ không biết chúng ta đắc A-la-hán". Kết quả: Tất cả các thầy đều buồn lòng và không đến nhà ông nữa.
Ông Bà-la-môn hết sức buồn khổ. Ông nghĩ: "Tại làm sao các vị Tỳ-kheo cao quý ấy lại không đến nhà mình nữa kìa?". Ông vào tinh xá đảnh lễ Phật và bạch sự việc. Đức Thế Tôn hỏi các thầy Tỳ-kheo:
- Này các Tỳ-kheo, vậy nghĩa là sao?
Các thầy bạch Phật lý do. Phật bảo:
- Nhưng này các Tỳ-kheo, các ông không muốn ông ấy gọi mình là A-la-hán ư?
- Bạch Thế Tôn, không ạ.
- Thế nhưng đây chỉ là cách một người bày tỏ lòng hoan hỉ, và việc biểu hiện niềm hoan hỉ ấy đâu có gì sai trái? Tấm lòng quí mến các vị A-la-hán của ông Bà-la-môn thật là vô bờ. Do đó, việc đúng đắn nhất đối với các ông là phải diệt trừ tham ái và chỉ lấy việc chứng đắc A-la-hán làm sự mong muốn duy nhất của mình.
Ngài nói kệ:
383Hỡi này Bà-la-môn
Hãy tinh tấn đoạn dòng,
Từ bỏ các dục lạc,
Biết được hành đoạn diệt,
Ngươi là bậc vô vi.

Chinda sotanti imaṃ dhammadesanaṃ satthā jetavane viharanto pasādabahulaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ ārabbha kathesi.
So kira brāhmaṇo bhagavato dhammadesanaṃ sutvā pasannacitto attano gehe soḷasamattānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ niccabhattaṃ paṭṭhapetvā bhikkhūnaṃ āgatavelāya pattaṃ gahetvā “āgacchantu bhonto arahanto, nisīdantu bhonto arahanto”ti yaṃkiñci vadanto arahantavādapaṭisaṃyuttameva vadati. Tesu puthujjanā “ayaṃ amhesu arahantasaññī”ti cintayiṃsu, khīṇāsavā “ayaṃ no khīṇāsavabhāvaṃ jānātī”ti. Evaṃ te sabbepi kukkuccāyantā tassa gehaṃ nāgamiṃsu. So dukkhī dummano “kinnu kho, ayyā, nāgacchantī”ti vihāraṃ gantvā satthāraṃ vanditvā tamatthaṃ ārocesi. Satthā bhikkhū āmantetvā “kiṃ etaṃ, bhikkhave”ti pucchitvā tehi tasmiṃ atthe ārocite “sādiyatha pana tumhe, bhikkhave, arahantavāda”nti āha. “Na sādiyāma mayaṃ, bhante”ti. “Evaṃ sante manussānaṃ etaṃ pasādabhaññaṃ, anāpatti, bhikkhave, pasādabhaññe, api ca kho pana brāhmaṇassa arahantesu adhimattaṃ pemaṃ, tasmā tumhehipi taṇhāsotaṃ chetvā arahattameva pattuṃ yutta”nti vatvā dhammaṃ desento imaṃ gāthamāha –
“Chinda sotaṃ parakkamma, kāme panuda brāhmaṇa;
Saṅkhārānaṃ khayaṃ ñatvā, akataññūsi brāhmaṇā”ti.
Tattha parakkammāti taṇhāsotaṃ nāma na appamattakena vāyāmena chindituṃ sakkā, tasmā ñāṇasampayuttena mahantena parakkamena parakkamitvā taṃ sotaṃ chinda. Ubhopi kāme panuda nīhara. Brāhmaṇāti khīṇāsavānaṃ ālapanametaṃ. Saṅkhārānanti pañcannaṃ khandhānaṃ khayaṃ jānitvā. Akataññūti evaṃ sante tvaṃ suvaṇṇādīsu kenaci akatassa nibbānassa jānanato akataññū nāma hosīti.
Desanāvasāne bahū sotāpattiphalādīni pāpuṇiṃsūti.

383. Cleave the stream...
This religious instruction was given by the Teacher while he was in residence at Jetavana with reference to Brahman Great-Joy, Pasādabahula.
The story goes that this Brahman once heard the Exalted One preach the Law, and was so delighted at heart that he thereafter gave food regularly to sixteen monks at his house. When the monks came, he would take their bowls and say, “May the Reverend Arahats draw near! May the Reverend Arahats sit down!” No matter whom he addressed, he greeted all of the monks with the title “Arahats.” Now those of the monks who had not yet attained the Fruit of Conversion thought to themselves, “This layman thinks that there are Arahats among us;” and those who had attained Arahatship thought to themselves, “This layman does not know that we have attained Arahatship.” The result was that all of the monks became dissatisfied and stopped going to his house.
This made the layman very sad and sorrowful. “Why pray do the noble monks no longer come to my house?” thought he. So he went to the monastery, saluted the Teacher, and told him what had happened. Then the Teacher addressed the monks and asked them, “Monks, what does this mean?” The monks told him what had happened. Said the Teacher, “But, monks, do you not like to have him greet you as ‘Arahats’?” “No, Reverend Sir, we do not like it.” “Nevertheless, monks, this is only an expression of the joy which men feel; and no fault can be found with an expression of joy. Now the love of the Brahman for the Arahats is boundless. Therefore it is proper that you too should sever the stream of Craving and be satisfied with nothing less than the attainment of Arahatship.” So saying, he preached the Law by pronouncing the following Stanza,
383. Cleave the stream boldly, drive away lusts, O Brahman.
Knowing the destruction of the Elements of Being, you shall know the Uncreate, O Brahman.
