Như hoa Vassikà ...
Đức Thế Tôn dạy những lời này khi Ngài ở tại Kỳ Viên, liên quan đến năm trăm vị Tỳ-kheo.
Chuyện kể rằng, các thầy Tỳ-kheo này sau khi khi được đức Thế Tôn cho đề mục thiền định rồi, liền lui vào rừng sâu và bắt đầu hành thiền. Đang ngồi thiền, các thầy trông thấy những bông lài mới nở tươi tắn chỉ sáng nay thôi, chiều đã úa tàn rũ cánh gục đầu. Các thầy tự nghĩ: "Chúng ta phải diệt trừ được thâm sân si trước khi những đóa hoa lìa cành". Và các thầy càng nỗ lực chuyên chú vào việc hành thiền, như vừa được tiếp thêm sức mạnh mới. Đức Thế Tôn quán sát các thầy Tỳ-kheo ấy và dạy rằng:
- Này các Tỳ-kheo, cũng như đóa hoa kia thoát khỏi cành, một vị Tỳ-kheo cần phải gắng sức thoát khỏi mối khổ sanh tử.
Vẫn ở tại hương thất, Ngài phóng một đạo hào quang và nói kệ cho các thầy Tỳ-kheo:
377Như hoa Vassikà,
Quăng bỏ cánh úa tàn,
Cũng vậy vị Tỳ-kheo,
Hãy giải thoát tham sân.
Nghe xong, tất cả năm trăm thầy Tỳ-kheo đều đắc quả A-la-hán.

Vassikā viya pupphānīti imaṃ dhammadesanaṃ satthā jetavane viharanto pañcasate bhikkhū ārabbha kathesi.
Te kira satthu santike kammaṭṭhānaṃ gahetvā araññe samaṇadhammaṃ karontā pātova pupphitāni vassikapupphāni sāyaṃ vaṇṭato muccantāni disvā “pupphānaṃ vaṇṭehi muccanato mayaṃ paṭhamataraṃ rāgādīhi muccissāmā”ti vāyamiṃsu. Satthā te bhikkhū oloketvā, “bhikkhave, bhikkhunā nāma vaṇṭato muccanapupphena viya dukkhato muccituṃ vāyamitabbamevā”ti vatvā gandhakuṭiyaṃ nisinnova ālokaṃ pharitvā imaṃ gāthamāha –
“Vassikā viya pupphāni, maddavāni pamuñcati;
Evaṃ rāgañca dosañca, vippamuñcetha bhikkhavo”ti.
Tattha vassikāti sumanā. Maddavānīti milātāni. Idaṃ vuttaṃ hoti – yathā vassikā hiyyo pupphitapupphāni punadivase purāṇabhūtāni muñcati, vaṇṭato vissajjeti, evaṃ tumhepi rāgādayo dose vippamuñcethāti.
Desanāvasāne sabbepi te bhikkhū arahatte patiṭṭhahiṃsūti.

377. Even as the jasmine...
This religious instruction was given by the Teacher while he was in residence at Jetavana with reference to five hundred monks.
The story goes that these monks obtained a Subject of Meditation from the Teacher, retired to the forest, and applied themselves to meditation. While thus engaged, they saw jasmine flowers which had blossomed that very morning, dropping in the evening from the stem. Thereupon they thought to themselves, “We will obtain release from lust, hatred, and delusion, before you obtain release from your stems,” and applied themselves to meditation with renewed vigor. The Teacher beheld those monks and said, “Monks, even as a flower is released from its stem, even so should a monk strive to obtain release from the pain of birth and rebirth.” And even as he sat within the Perfumed Chamber, he sent forth a light and pronounced the following Stanza,
377. Even as the jasmine sheds its withered flowers,
Even so, monks, should one shed lust and hatred.
At the conclusion of the lesson, all those monks were established in Arahatship.
